Characters - Very much a work in progress, as they keep appearing!
We’ve created a list of the children of Éowyn and Faramir, along with sketches, to be found here.
Meanwhile, enjoy some of the non-human characters
-
Vashir the Fat Eunuch Walrus
A good natured, obliging cat with a slight underbite, Vashir is one of the six or so “feline eunuchs” who live with Amrothos and Nilofar. His hobbies include eating, napping, and, because he was requested not to hunt hamsters, out of an abundance of caution he does not go mousing.
He is named for Nilofar’s least favourite brother-in-law, Vashir Emir of Amrun.
-
Denethor the Tiresome Eunuch Magnet
A friendly, curious cat, Denethor is another of the “feline eunuchs” who live with Amrothos and Nilofar. His hobbies include sitting on people, their books, and their letters, though he is very careful not to disrupt experiments. He is often found on a high shelf or underfoot observing humans. He is very fond of both Eowyn and Faramir when they visit, and will follow them around, much to their amusement.
He is named for Amorothos’ least favourite uncle.
-
Earnur Are We Sure He's A Eunuch
Another of the cats that live with Amrothos and Nilofar, Earnur is a large-jowled cat who is …overly friendly. Amrothos and Nilofar have invented the spray bottle due to Earnur. When he is not being overly enthusiastically friendly to all and sundry (and also to inanimate objects), he is an affable, steady cat who when requested to will happily dispatch mynas, sparrows and other pests.
He is named after Gondorian King of the same name, who Amrothos and Nilofar think was most irresponsible.
-
Naule
Amrothos and NIlofar’s dog, one of Fang’s daughters with a Dol Amroth Shepherd Dog, Naule is an elegant, quiet dog who likes order and consequently will herd anyone and anything back to its proper place. She was largely brought up by the feline eunuchs, and so behaves…unexpectedly for a dog.
-
Amrothos and Nilofar's hamsters
Look, it would take too long to explain. They’ll show up. And yes, you can get them in albino.
-
Castamir
Castamir is a very large walrus (not to be confused with Vashir the Fat Eunuch Walrus, who is a cat, or Vashir the Walrus who is Nilofar’s brother in law, the Emir of Amrun. And a human), who, together with his family, periodically comes to Dol Amroth from their usual home in the Forodwaith. Castamir and his family come for the plentiful fish around Amrothos and Nilofar’s estate, due to the excellent conditions due to the warm water from and resulting algae and the complete lack of interest by Amrothos and Nilofar in any significant hunting or fishing on their estate..
-
Eldacar
Eldacar is a very large elephant seal and the leader of the resident seal colony near Amrothos and Nilofar’s estate. Due to the very large stocks of fish near the estate (a by product of the warm water discharged from the house and the resultant algae and well grown seaweed) and Amorthos and Nilofar’s aforementioned disinterest in hunting or fishing, the seal colony is a healthy one.
Periodically he must defend his territory against Castamir who comes to usurp his position as king of the bay.
-
Isildur
Imrazor’s cat, a gift to him from his parents, Isildur is so named because he is brave, intelligent, and utterly disobedient - in any case, it wouldn’t matter what he was called, he doesn’t answer unless he wishes to. He accompanies Imrazor to sea as the ship’s cat (if there is already one on board, Imrazor makes sure he is at the top of hierarchy), and is an excellent swimmer.
He once ate a Corsair captain’s parrot.
-
Beruthiel (I, II, III, IV)
Despite Faramir’s stringent protests that he is not a cat man, nevertheless, each of the Beruthiels has not taken any notice of this and come out of the forest of Emyn Arnen and taken up residence with Faramir. There are four Beruthiels, sequentially, each appearing a few days after the death of her predecessor. They are all clearly not the same cat, but there appear to have been handover notes. Each is a different coat pattern, but they are uniformly enormous, long haired, and devoted to the family, but especially to Faramir (and Eowyn as a secondary person) . Faramir calls each of them Beruthiel (and each answers to it, when she feels like it), to minimise confusion.
-
Melkor
Like her father Faramir, Finduilas opts to keep the same name for her successive cats, though she takes it a step further - all her Melkors also look alike being black, green-eyed cats with a distinct ability to determine exactly anyone’s feelings about cats in general and him in particular. If you dislike cats, Melkor is going to come and sit on you and give you a taste of his claws. If you are fond of cats, well, Melkor will carefully stay just out of arms-reach of you…
-
Fang
Despite Lord Cirion telling a different origin story to everyone regarding Fang (found in Isenguard, wandered in from the part of the Ithilien woods where the Elves are, found in Harondor during campaign), and the hardships that Fang had suffered before coming to Cirion, Fang was born into the supreme comfort of the Emyn Arnen kennels, a mixture of Eastfold Shepherd, Ithilien Wolfhound and Arnorian Boarhound. Fang is roughly the size of a large pony, bears more than a vague resemblance to a friendly warg, and has an unerring instinct for who will give him a treat at feasts.
-
Fluffy (note: temporary stock image, Fluffy did not approve any headshots)
A large and particularly beautiful Great Haradric Birdeater spider, hatched in Beyazim or surrounds, and currently residing with Lord Cirion of Emyn Arnen
-
Brian
Nobody is quite sure what Brian is. When he was presented to King Elessar as a diplomatic gift, the interpreter was mumbling and everyone was too polite to ask them to repeat. Anyway, like most fauna diplomatic gifts, Brian lives at Emyn Arnen. He’s made friends with the sheep and goats.
-
Ostoher
Ecthelion and Beren’s cat. Sometimes called “Ossie”, much to his disapproval.
And yes, you’re right. Ostoher is judging you, with some concern. He disapproves of your life choices. All of them.
-
Moriel
A very small, fluffy back dog with enormous ears, Moriel was found on the streets of Beyazim by Cothion and Arahaelon, starving and being beaten. Once back at the Embassy, she was immediately adopted by Nallon and Baradir, who shower her with sickening affection and too many treats.
-
Mardil
A large black and white (in other cultures, tuxedo) cat originally from Ithilien (a descendant of one of the Beruthiels), but now residing with Lord Arahaelon. As a hunter, Mardil is particularly adept at bringing in dozens of paralysed mice and rats a day (as he knows exactly where to sever the spinal cord without killing his victim, merely leaving them thrashing in panic). Nearly everyone suspects that Mardil may be a psychopath, even by cat standards. Arahaelon thinks Mardil’s cute, and a very good cat.
He once tried to kill Moriel.
-
Scraps
Mistor’s dog, who keeps the Army stores free of rodents. Descended from the Emyn Arnen dog, Bits. Very affectionate and a little insane. But of course! Scraps is a terrier!
-
Roxelana
When Ferzil picked the prettiest kitten from the litter of the best kitchen mouser, he thought that he had a most excellent solution to the pest problem in the harem. Little did he know, that while Roxelana is indeed a superb mouser, she also has no compunction attacking everyone and everything (including the Emperor of Harad’s leopards, all the eunuchs, and the Emperor himself!) with the exception of the Empress-Mother, who is devoted to Roxelana and won’t have a word said against her.
